PANJIM: As it curtails upcoming Diwali celebration in the capital, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has cancelled its annual Narkasur competition along with imposing ban on playing DJs, loud music and use of fire crackers.

Addressing the media persons on Tuesday, City Mayor Uday Madkaikar said that the Corporation will soon release standard operating procedure (SOP) for Diwali festival.
He said that the Corporation has decided to cancel the traditional Narkasur competition while appealing citizens to refrain from making the demon.
“Since it’s a tradition, those wanting to make Narkasur effigies, should limit its size to five feet only,” he said.
“Also, no decoration, loud music, DJs, fire crackers, decoration or procession will be allowed of the effigies,” he said.
Madkaikar said that since the SOP was followed during Ganesh festival, the COVID cases witnessed sharp decline compared to other parts of the State.
“Hence, will appeal people to follow the norms and enjoy the festival,” he added.
The Mayor said that ban on loud music and fire crackers are imposed so that it does not affect the health of COVID patients, who are undergoing home isolation.
Meanwhile, the CCP has resumed action against the tourists, who are found within city, without wearing mask. So far, over 150 tourists have been fined.
