Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday announced that the Central Government will appoint a Census Commissioner by next week to determine and verify the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population in Goa, marking the first step towards implementing reservation of Assembly seats for the ST community.

Sawant said the appointment of the Census Commissioner is a crucial step in the process of identifying and verifying the ST population, which is necessary for the implementation of political reservation for the community in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister stated that the exercise will pave the way for reserving Assembly constituencies for Scheduled Tribes in accordance with constitutional provisions and the prescribed legal framework.

The move follows the granting of Scheduled Tribe status to several communities in Goa and is expected to lay the groundwork for future delimitation and reservation of Assembly seats based on verified population data.

Further details regarding the census exercise and the timeline for its completion are expected to be announced after the appointment of the Census Commissioner.
