Major issues in the collection of the garbage fees along with house tax from the town dwellers have cropped up recently at the Margao Municipal Council (MMC). The council has put garbage tax with house tax and have started collecting it along with house tax. However, software of the NIC (National Informatics Corporation) has been developed without the proper study and survey of the town and that has resulted in imposed garbage fees on woodsheds and stilt parking too. The standing committee of the MMC has also discussed the same issue recently.
The people dwelling in the town have been raising the issues with the MMC Chief Officer recently. “As the computer software prepared by the NIC generates a total receipt, people, especially non-resident Goans have taken objection to the charges as they claim that they do not generate garbage at all,” said Chief officer Yashwant Tawde.
A landlord who has two tenants in his property came on a visit to the office of the Chief Officer and complained that the tenants are generating garbage but he is charged for the same. Several such cases have been discovered by the MMC wherein even the stilt parking of the buildings and the wooden sheds of houses which are not generating garbage are being charged.
The Chief Officer meanwhile, informed that the issues were discussed in the standing committee meeting of the MMC and the Council has decided to discuss issue and then take a resolution.
The Chief Officer further claimed, “All over India, in the major corporations the garbage fees are being collected along with house tax. But we have to check the modalities of the same and learn how they have incorporated the idea.”
“A survey of the city is required to ascertain how many stilt parkings, houses and outhouses are there. It would have been easier for the collection of fees from town dwellers if the same was available,” added Tawde. He also agreed that flatly charging fees to all has its hindrances and several people have registered their issues regarding it.
