PANJIM: Indicating quality education and competitiveness among the students, the Class XII pass percentage has zoomed to record high at 90.10, superseding last academic year’s 88.10 overall percentage. The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) also observed an annual trend wherein girls have once again outshone boys.
“The pass percentage is the highest ever in the State. In fact, every passing year, the pass percentage is witnessing an increase,” Board Chairman J R Rebello told a press conference while declaring 2015-16 HSSC results on Thursday.
While the overall pass percentage stood at 90.10, girls registered an impressive 92.43 per cent against 87.58 per cent of the boys. “The students’ strength is definitely increasing annually and they are taking up the challenge to perform better. In my personal opinion, the new generation knows much more than the older ones,” he commented in response to a media query over the good performance of students every year.
The February-March 2016 examination across 16 centres saw 15,410 students appearing of which 13,885 passed and an additional 406 exempted candidates who re-appeared had only 164 clearing the exams.
Rebello further informed that a total 3119 students were eligible for sports merit marks of whom 190 cleared the exams with the help of these marks.
Of the four streams, Commerce recorded the highest 91.16 pass percentage followed by Science 89.19 while Vocational had 89.46 per cent. Arts, once again recorded the least 89.35 per cent.
Science stream slipped from the first position recorded at 90.81 per cent last year to second this year while Arts, though continued to be fourth in the list, improved its performance by a five per cent increase than the previous year. Moreover, 25 higher secondary schools secured over 95 per cent marks as against 21 last year.
For those who failed in one or two subjects, the Board has scheduled supplementary exams on June 8, results of which is likely in less than a fortnight of conducting the exams.
The Board has also for the very first time introduced submitting scanned copies of answer sheets to students desiring for it. “The concerned student will have to apply to their respective institutions. The scanned copies will be mailed to them. It cannot be given to anyone else,” the chairman explained.

Answer sheets digitally corrected
Majority answer sheets were corrected digitally with Goa Board calling a major success in its first attempt, after an experiment conducted last October. Speaking to reporters while announcing the results, Chairman J Rebello said majority papers except mathematics, accountancy, and a few selected ones, were digitally corrected.
“Some papers were corrected manually because we needed to experiment and compare the two types of correction. The teachers had to tick mark on the screen and the marks were automatically uploaded and saved,” he said adding that around 2,000 answer sheets were corrected last October, however, the quality of answer sheets were visible in this main exams only.
