PANJIM: The state has made its stance clear on the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial movie “Padmavat” with the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar claiming that the government will not interfere if the makers of the film get the censor certificate from the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Responding to demands for banning the film’s release in many parts of the country, he said, “If the filmmaker gets a censor certificate, then in principle, I have no objection to it. But I will definitely check if there will be a law and order problem,” he said.
“If there is a censor certificate, we are not stopping it from releasing. If they come with the certificate with some modifications, I don’t see a big reason we should interfere in it,” he added.
On the possibility of law and order situation following the film’s release, Parrikar said, “If there is any apprehension that law and order situation will be disturbed then the government has to step in as a temporary measure. These are not permanent measures. No one will be allowed to take law in their hands on any issue.”
In Goa, BJP’s women’s wing had demanded a ban on the film’s release stating a tourism-oriented state cannot afford law and order problem. Certain groups too had submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding a ban on the movie in the State.
In its report to the Chief Minister, the Goa Police had recommended against the screening of the movie during the peak tourist season as its personnel were deployed for security arrangements. Parrikar said he has been regularly taking updates on the law and order situation from the department.
“There is nothing called as Padmavati, I believe. I also believe that so far censor certificate has not been given to the movie. Everything will depend on the censor certificate… It is all subject to day-to-day situation and we will have to tackle it than ban it (movie),” he added.
