BICHOLIM: Heavy rains affected normal life in Bicholim taluka on Tuesday.

People were caught unawares due to sudden rains at about 11.30 am and rainwater quickly clogged the gutters and drains at Bandarwada, near Shivaji Maidan, Bordem and other parts of Bicholim city. Frequent power failure was reported at many places.

Many people preferred to remain indoors, while two-wheeler motorists and pedestrians scurried across to protect themselves from the rains.

The rains also disrupted pre-monsoon maintenance work in and around the town. Ongoing work to de-silt the Bicholim River had to be called off due to heavy rains.

Ponda correspondent adds: Unseasonal rains caught many commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, off guard in Ponda taluka on Tuesday.

Many commuters were seen drenched as they had not been prepared for the sudden rains. The rains lasted for a couple of hours and there was no major untoward incident reported in the taluka.

Ponda fire services attended to two emergency calls in the evening. While a Gul Muhar tree came crashing down on a house at Usgao, another tree rested on a building at Naga Masjid in Curti-Ponda. Electricity supply was also disrupted to several parts of the taluka.
