PANJIM: The Congress on Saturday demanded that the recently promulgated Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, be discussed and debated during the upcoming State Legislative Assembly session, alleging that the amendments are unclear and confusing.

In a press statement issued, Congress convenor of Media Cell Trajano D’Mello demanded that the Ordinance be recalled and the same be placed before the State Assembly for discussion and debate on its advantages and disadvantages.
“There are many Goan families who are a lessee of the Council and running the businesses from last many years. But now according to new rule the shops which were run by grandfathers, their grandsons may not get long continuity. It could be extended upto ten years,” he pointed out.
He claimed that with such rules, Goans will be deprived of their ancestral businesses and might go in the hands of non-Goans.
“This is not only a draconian law, but will help the government to make more corruption,” D’Mello alleged.
The Congress leader claimed that there are more confusions than clarity in this ordinance. “It has used terms like ‘holder’, ‘family’, etc, which was earlier referred as blood relations,” he said.
He pointed out that the amendment also increases rent from 5 per cent to 10 per cent instead of sympathising with the community during the pandemic.
