VASCO: Leader of Opposition and Quepem MLA Chandrakant alias Babu Kavalekar on Tuesday said that Congress in Goa will not allow MPT to go ahead with any of the three proposed expansion projects as these have been opposed by the people.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of combined public hearing for proposed expansion projects at MPT at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, Kavlekar said, “People of Vasco and Goa have already expressed their opposition to the proposed expansion projects by MPT and despite public opposition, if MPT goes ahead with its plans and tries to execute the project by force then Congress party in Goa under my leadership will react strongly. All our MLAs and party workers will rally behind people opposing MPT’s expansion project”.
He further said, “It has been exposed that MPT which is currently handling seven million tonnes of coal cannot control pollution and if they handle 25 million tonnes of coal then it would be disastrous for the whole of Goa. Doctors today have confirmed that more people in Vasco are suffering with respiratory diseases due to the coal pollution and thus activists, citizens and experts have highlighted the ill effects of coal and thus I feel that Goa government and GSPCB should take this issue of coal pollution very seriously. It should not happen that to please some one or two industrialists. We will not allow government to play with the lives of people of Goa”.
