VASCO: Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and the Cortalim Village Panchayat on Monday strongly opposed the decision of the River Navigation Department (RND) to tender the jetty situated near Cortalim ferry point for tourism activities and suspected that it was to relocate the off-shore casino vessels.
MLA Vas along with panchayat members met the Captain of Ports James Braganza regarding the issue and demanded a joint inspection to know the exact plans of the government.

Vas said that neither he nor the village panchayat was taken into confidence and that he had already written a letter objecting to the RND’s decision to tender the Cortalim jetty without any information and by keeping them in the dark. He said that he came to know about the plans after reading the tender notice in the newspaper and claimed that the jetty will not able to handle tourism activity, heavy traffic or other related activities.
Vas said that there are apprehensions in the minds of the villagers that the jetty is being developed to relocated the off-shore casino vessels from Mandovi River.
He said that in the past the villagers had stoned boats when they were anchored in the river as it was causing noise pollution due to playing of loud music. Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said that the panchayat will soon convene a gram sabha to inform the villagers about the ongoing developments and pass resolutions opposing jetty for tourism activity.
