MAPUSA: Stating that court orders are coming but don’t know where these orders are going, the Noise Pollution Monitoring Committee for Calangute said the issue of noise pollution is existing for the last 10 to 15 years.
Francois D’Souza of the Calangute Noise monitoring committee said “If the issue is continuously followed, then it can be solved because there are laws under Noise Pollution Act as well as Pollution Control Board which are strong but we need somebody who can implement these laws. Enforcement and implementation of these laws are very important to curb noise pollution”.
“As a Noise Pollution Monitoring Committee, we can only report instances of noise pollution to the Collector, who is the chairman of the committee, and to the police. We have no authority to file a complaint. Since authorities used to not take action or say that no such instances are reported, the High Court said that there should be a Citizen’s Committee to report such instances. North has a Committee but for South the panel is not yet formed,” D’Souza said.
“Noise pollution is not only limited to the coastal belt but in internal villages too where villas are hired on rent, loud music is played. We welcome tourists but not at the cost of our health. This is causes mental disturbance and stress”, D’Souza said.
“One of the highlights is that police say that people call them simply. But the police should understand that people call them at odd hours in the middle of the night because they face genuine problems. Why will people get up in the middle of the night and call up the police? There are many people who are suffering badly but they don’t call up the police because they fear the police and this gives the violator the upper hand to continue”, D’Souza said.
