Death stalks Goa’s roads

152 fatal accidents from January to September, compared to 130 during the corresponding months of last year

PANJIM: Fatal accidents in the State increased by almost 17 per cent during last eight months as compared to corresponding months of last year. The total persons killed during the last eight months were 164 as against 133 total deaths during the corresponding months of last year, with highest two-wheeler riders’ deaths.

As many as 152 died in road accidents from January to August this year as compared to 130 deaths reported in the corresponding months of 2021.

The statistics provided by the Transport department also shows rise in total number of accidents which were 2009 as compared to 1742 reported in last year while, 223 grievous accounts were reported during the last eight months as against 95 in 2021.  

Among the fatalities the maximum were two-wheeler riders. A total of 100 two-wheeler riders were killed during the last eight months of this year as compared to 80 deaths last year.

Meanwhile, Additional Director of Transport Prahlad Desai, who is also appointed as Lead Agency chairman said that all the observations made by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety are being improved to reduce fatalities.  

The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety visited Goa in April this year and conducted ground level check as far as accident prone zones were concerned.

The six-member committee headed by Avinash Dubedi inspected all the black spots and also checked the data provided and the measures taken by the State government to curb road accidents and reduce fatalities.

Desai said that the transport department and the Goa traffic police had identified 24 black spots across the State and that the Lead Agency took corrective measures such as erecting signages etc to reduce road accidents. “We have sent whatever details asked by the committee,” he said adding that all guidelines on road safety issued by the Supreme Court are strictly adhered to.
