PANJIM: Stating that the party did not find any businessman or rich person in queue outside any bank or ATM to withdraw money or exchange old currency notes, Congress on Wednesday alleged that demonetisation is a major “scam” and “governance blunder”.
Addressing the media, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Goa desk in-charge Digvijay Singh said that demonetisation is a major blunder in governance by BJP and a scam where some people were informed in advance about the move.
“I did not see a single face of any rich person or anyone from the corporate sector in the queue outside a bank or ATM for currency. What we saw were faces of people, who did not look like holders of black money. Poor people are crying, while the rich are smiling,” he said.
“All this has created an economic crisis and economic chaos,” he added.
Singh said that the Prime Minister’s claim that demonetisation would help curb corruption, black money, terrorism and counter-fit currency, has “fallen flat”.
“There is corruption as middlemen or agents are involved in exchanging old currency notes with new ones on 33:66 ratio. On terrorism front, two terrorists who were killed this morning, were found with new Rs 2000 currency,” he added.
Singh said that in Goa too, middlemen are involved in exchanging old currency notes. He alleged that Rs two crore old currency notes were seized by authorities from Arambol in Pernem taluka.
Meanwhile, the National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) national executive led by President Amrita Dhawan held a march against demonetisation to Raj Bhawan.
