HONDA: A firm dealing with waste management at Pissurlem IDC and allegedly discharging highly hazardous chemical waste into a nullah here has angered locals. Locals have claimed that this will harm the biodiversity, animals and humans as the nullah eventually pours into Mhadei river.
Pissurlem sarpanch Devanand Parab stated that he had informed both the Poriem MLA Dr Deviya Rane and the Valpoi police to initiate action against the irresponsible company.

A few years back, a waste treatment plant was constructed at the industrial estate to process waste generated here. The company had also chopped down trees to construct the treatment plant which is just a stone’s throw from the natural nullahs. Locals say that the waste discharged into the nullah has destroyed the surrounding biodiversity as per the locals and poses danger to people as the nullah flows through Kumbharkhan village and meets Mhadei river. This could also possibly affect the water treatment plant which is on the banks of the river.
“Monkeys as well as fish and crabs have died after drinking the toxic water. The government needs to shut down the polluting firm as it does not benefit locals in any way. The company did not give preference to locals when it came to employment so why should our village be polluted by the garbage from elsewhere,” asked Pissurlem sarpanch Devanand Parab.
Meanwhile when contacted, the company’s founder said stated that they had not started any operations here and the question of them releasing chemicals into the nullah just does not arise.
