PANJIM: In the backdrop of recent incidents exposing the aggressive behaviour of some men-in-khaki, Goa Police Chief Muktesh Chander has warned them to come out of the superficial movie world or face dismissal for misconduct.
Addressing the police force on ‘behavioural aspect and code and conduct while dealing with public,’ the Director General of Police (DGP) also warned senior officers of stern action if personnel with short temperament are let off without any departmental action.
“Some misguided policemen start behaving like Singham (Ajay Devgan starrer movie), which was shot in Goa. There is another movie wherein the police take law in their own hands and does all kinds of funny things. There are many such instances. Now what happens is that these are movies, so just leave it to the movie world only. Don’t take it seriously and start behaving in that same fashion. We are bound by laws and procedures”, he said warning that any misconduct or misbehaviour with the public would not go unpunished or unnoticed.
The day-long workshop held at Altinho on Friday was held in the wake of separate cases wherein police personnel including three police sub-inspectors (PSI) assaulted two youth at Fatorda stadium and Cuncolim, within a span of one month. While in the first matter, the policemen are facing departmental enquiry for major penalty, while the second case saw suspension of four constables and a PSI.
Chander has also asked the Deputy Inspector General of Police and other high ranking officers to identify such short tempered personnel and refer them for counselling or psychiatric treatment, if required.
“I am very disturbed,” he said referring to the Fatorda and Cuncolim incidents, adding, “I have asked the DIG and all officers to talk to the staff, find their names and brief them again and again (to control their anger). If somebody cannot remain cool, he needs counselling or may be psychiatric treatment. If he still cannot correct himself and indulges in such behaviour, the department will come down heavily on them. I cannot allow some black sheep to spoil the entire police force in Goa,” he warned.
The DGP has proposed to register criminal case against personnel involved in gross wrongdoing.
“If you don’t love your job, if you don’t want your job and indulge in such malpractice, then you are doing it at your own risk. For me, these cases are straightaway dismissal,” he said while also advising the police force to not mix the personal issues with professional life.
