Several councillors, including Vice Chairperson Tara Kerkar, put the issue before Chairperson Lavina D’Souza in a special council meeting that saw heated debates on Friday.
“Such people are trying to embarrass us so that they can take political benefit in the forthcoming municipal elections. It has to stop because even our municipal supervisors are offering labourers only to these aspirants by taking money from them, but are denying the same to the ward councillors. However, the workers register shows the name of the respective councillors, which is nothing but a fraud committed by the municipal supervisors,” said Councillor Fiola Rego.
Lavina raised the issue of neglected community centres that was highlighted by Herald recently. It was decided that the councillors would bring the issue to the council’s notice for action.
Other issues discussed in the meeting included cleaning of public wells, regularisation of workers, government grants, the damaged Ashoka trees, GSUDA’s five per cent grants, among others.
Meanwhile, the municipal council hall turned into battle ground during the special council meeting on Friday. Councillors claimed that a few people who were managing the municipal high school’s affairs had indulged in corrupt practices while filling up vacancies. However, the chairman of the school’s management committee Nitin Chopdekar gave himself a clean chit and alleged that the issue was unnecessarily hyped and complicated by a minister.
