Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman did not attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi despite receiving an invitation from India, but he is scheduled to travel to New York on September 21 to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Rahman has not yet made an official visit to India since taking office in February 2026. India had extended two separate invitations to the Bangladesh prime minister — one for a bilateral visit and another to attend the BRICS outreach session in his capacity as chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday that New Delhi was yet to receive a response from Dhaka regarding the proposed bilateral visit and that there was no update on when Rahman might travel to India.
Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said Dhaka wants to establish a new working relationship with India through direct bilateral engagement rather than beginning with a multilateral forum. He indicated that a visit would take place when both sides agree on a mutually acceptable schedule.
Rahman’s immediate focus will be the UN General Assembly in New York, where he is expected to outline Bangladesh’s outlook and future priorities before world leaders. He is also scheduled to host a high-level side event focusing on the prolonged Rohingya refugee crisis.
The Bangladesh prime minister’s UNGA visit comes as Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman presides over the 81st session of the General Assembly. The session is being held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
The possibility of meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA remains open, with Bangladeshi officials noting that such engagements are often finalised during major multilateral gatherings.
