Evict unauthorised hawkers, say Margao residents

MARGAO: Yet again, citizens have expressed anger over unauthorised hawkers occupying the Margao streets causing inconvenience and demanded that they be evicted at the earliest.

Earlier, citizens had filed written complaints before the Margao Municipal Council and Police; however, these hawkers create a nuisance for the public as well as for the shopkeepers who are running legitimate businesses in the new market area.

It is pertinent to note that earlier councillor Mahesh Amonkar, and Navin Pai Raikar objected to the illegalities right besides the Margao Municipal building.

A Fatorda resident charged that neither the civic body nor the police were initiating any action against the unauthorised hawkers occupying the streets of Margao.

“As per the directions of the court, all business activities are barred on the streets, however, no action is taken against these migrant vendors creating inconvenience to the public”, the woman charged.

She also alleged that unauthorized hawkers were conducting illegal business and go scot free as they have the tacit blessings of political leaders. “If they authorities fail to initiate action against the illegal hawkers then I will also do the same business on the streets,” she warned.
