MARGAO: There was a major fire in Nessai on Wednesday afternoon where wooden logs worth lakhs of rupees were gutted, along with other equipment.

While five fire tenders were rushed to the site to douse the blaze, fire brigade personnel suspected that the fire could have been deliberately set, as the surrounding areas were not affected by the fire and there was no electrical connection to cause a short-circuit spark.
The fire brigade personnel however added that they have not collected proof yet so the cause of the fire cannot be identified with certainty at this point.
The local police are also investigating the case.
Architect Royla Fernandes, who had teak wood at the sawmill that was burnt also rushed to the site. She lamented that she too had suffered a personal loss.
She also pointed out that the efforts of all those who are associated with the sawmill’s operations had been wiped out by the fire, given that their losses would be huge. Fernandes called for measures to be taken to check and prevent such fires from occurring as she too believed that the fire could have been set deliberately.
The local carpenter community was distraught, as the fire has caused a major setback to their livelihoods.
The fire was so intense that even after dousing the flames, several small fires cropped up at different places again, and had to be put out. Late on Wednesday night, there was a minor fire at Dandevaddo in Chinchinim, alongside the highway, where dry grass caught on fire.
