MARGAO: In the last three weeks, there have been at least 5 cases reported of dengue in Vidhyanagar area of Fatorda. One couple from Sanchayani Complex in Vidhyanagar and three other persons in the neighbourhood were admitted in private hospitals and are recovering.
The Health Department had initiated action only after the Sanchayani Housing Society submitted a written complaint. The Department inspected the site twice and fogged the area. They also visited each building to check for stagnant water. They had assured that the department would conduct an awareness camps but are yet to do so.
There were two cases reported in Chandravaddo and Goulivaddo in Fatorda. Considering that dengue mosquito can fly up to 200 metres in an area and in case of an outbreak, an area of 2-km radius has to be scanned and fumigated as a precautionary measure, the Margao Municipal Council and Health Department have not issued any advisory to public warning them of the presence of dengue. Some cases go unreported as the patients are admitted to private hospitals and the families do not inform the Health department.
A woman from the Housing Board reportedly died of Swine flu at a private hospital in Margao on Tuesday. The woman was a native of Quepem.
