BICHOLIM: Following stiff opposition from the public, the Bicholim Municipal Council on Saturday removed the five illegal kiosks erected in the market.
A great controversy erupted following the plan of constructing five kiosks in the market near the shed of Sarvajanik Ganeshshotsav. People from Bicholim including Bicholim Bachao Abhiyaan (BBA) accused the chief officer and the council of giving free hand to the kiosks owners to construct the illegal sheds.
However, Chief Officer Vivek Naik had refuted all the allegations. He had said the kiosks did not have any technical sanction and are illegal. “The allegations are totally false as we have not given them any permission. We are in the process of completion of phase 4 project and so the stair case will have to be removed. Till the time the stair case is removed the project cannot take shape,” Naik had said.
Following stiff opposition from all the sections of society, the BMC was forced to convene a special meeting wherein it was decided to remove the kiosks.
During the meeting, the discussion was focused on future plan of action with regards to newly constructed five shops with shutters by five businessmen from Bicholim market that were sealed by BMC.
Finally, it was decided to remove all the five shops as its owners erected it without obtaining prior permission from BMC’s technical section in parking zone obstructing traffic.
The owners were given time to remove the kiosks and as they did not respond, the BMC removed the kiosks and confiscated all the material on Saturday. Till late evening the dismantling was ongoing.
