PONDA: A Forest Department raid on Tuesday morning exposed illegal slaughter of pigs in a private property at Petke, Dharbandora.

In the raid, four pigs were found slaughtered and 80 kg meat packed in plastic bags meant for selling was seized, while 18 other live pigs were rescued and sent to Bondla.
The investigation is on by Forest Department to confirm whether the pigs are domestic or wild boar and also the source from where the pigs were brought for slaughter.
Dharbandora Village Panchayat Sarpanch Balaji Gawas condemned the incident and warned that they will not tolerate such activities in the panchayat jurisdiction. He criticised the people living in rented premises involved in slaughter of pigs.
He said the private property belongs to one Ponda-based land owner. He appreciated alert citizens for exposing the slaughtering of animals.
A local youth brought the matter to light when at around 7 am they noticed slaughtering of pigs in a private property and informed the Dharbandora Panch Mahesh Naik, following which Forest officials was informed.
The Forest Officer at Collem Narayan Prabudesai said following information about slaughter of wild boars, he rushed at the spot. “Veterinary doctors also arrived at the spot to verifying the reports. We are investigating into the matter,” Prabudesai said.
Meanwhile, the two labourers at site told 0 Heraldo that the pigs are brought from Hubbali and its meat is sold here, with customers from various parts of Savordem and Margao visit the spot to buy meat.
