PONDA: Taps in Ganjem, Usgao households have run dry for the past five days. Ironically, both Ponda and Tiswadi talukas are provided water from river Mhadei from Ganjem itself.

To add to their woes, Ganjem locals on Tuesday, had to buy water from tankers at their own expense. Some locals relied on a spring which is 1.5-km away from the village. Sarpanch Narendra Gaonkar threatened to come on the roads with the locals and halt the WRD plant which is based at Ganjem in protest to WRD officers’ non-cooperation.
“People have not been receiving water for the past five days. This includes Ganjem and Nanus locals. WRD engineers are not cooperating with us and if supply is not received by Wednesday, locals will take to the roads and halt the work of the water treatment plant which is ongoing in the village,” said sarpanch Narendra Gaonkar.
Meanwhile, PWD workers and engineers were examining the water pipelines in the area for the last three to four days to detect the fault. They traced the damaged pipeline on Tuesday afternoon and repaired it on war-footing by late night. Since the water supply has now been restored, the villagers may change their plan to protest on Wednesday.
