MARGAO: It has been over a month since the issue of garbage on the eastern bypass was raised. However, the situation has got worse last month with sacks of garbage reaching the tarred section of the road.
Neither the Davorlim Panchayat nor the Margao municipality is willing to stop the garbage dumping on this important National Highway.
The Herald had raised the issue of the garbage being dumped on the eastern bypass from Maruti Mandir to Ravanfond circle. A Davorlim panch had later cleared the garbage near the Layamati spring and had erected fence to stop the dumping. Sadly, Davorlim, Rumdamol and the MMC have not even taken an initiative to clear the garbage in the last one month.
Ravindra Redkar, a Davorlim local, said, “I have a taxi and often ply tourists on this road. I feel ashamed when the tourists see this garbage on the road.”
Davorlim and Rumdamol panchayats expect the MMC to clear the garbage from the highway.
The eastern bypass is one of the busiest roads in Margao. Thousands of tourists travel through this road daily towards Karwar, Mangalore and beyond. This highway links entire Goa to one of the biggest and the busiest railway stations on Konkan Railway route.
