PANJIM: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday said that Goa Medical College (GMC), which caters to a large number of people, is itself in a critical condition.
He pointed out that the condition of many units in the hospital is critical. “This will not be tolerated,” he said.
Rane directed the Dean of GMC and HODs to list their requirements to meet the medical services at the hospital. “I was shocked during my visit to see stray dogs moving freely in the hospital. Such lethargy will not be tolerated in the future,” he said.
The workload at the hospital has increased manifold, the Health Minister said, and stressed on the need to sort out the issues. He emphasised on the need to increase the registration counters before May 15 to avoid rush and queues of patients.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthen and provide all facilities at GMC, Rane said that patients coming for treatment are mainly poor and can’t afford to buy medicines from outside. He advised doctors to avoid prescribing medicines to patients from outside and to ensure that the medicines are available within the hospital.
Emphasising that GMC’s functioning needs to be strengthened, Rane assured to provide better and quality facilities to cater to the needs of patients as well as doctors.
Rane held the meeting to acquaint himself with difficulties faced by doctors in the discharge of their professional duties and also to ascertain the facilities required to provide better services to the patients. The meeting discussed issues like recruitment of doctors, manpower and infrastructure.
GMC will be one of the best hospitals in India, Rane said and appealed to the doctors to suggest ideas to make it proactive to meet the needs of the patients.
GMC Dean Dr Pradeep Naik, Medical Superintendent Dr Savio Rodrigues, Director (Admn) Sanjeev Gadkar and Shri Health Joint Secretary Sunil Masurkar were present for the meeting.
