PANJIM: Political parties, members of the civil society, student activists and citizens in Goa on Monday held a demonstration protesting Sunday’s attack on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students in Delhi.
Members of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), Mahila Congress, National Students Union of India (NSUI), Goa Forward Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena, social activists and former students of JNU, demanded that immediate action be taken against ABVP, who they alleged were the masterminds of the attack. The protest was held at Azad Maidan, Panjim.
The protesters held placards and banners against the alleged violence by ABVP members and chanted slogans stating ‘Azadi…Hum Honge Kamyab’.
At least 40 students and staff of the JNU were admitted to hospital with injuries after the attack. Videos of the violence spread quickly via WhatsApp and were then broadcast on television, sparking shock and outrage.
“JNU has seen protests against the hostel fee hike for months now. Those protesters were detained many times and even sent to jail. But now the police is just silent about this incident, this shows us who is responsible,” a former JNU student said.
The protestors have decided to launch a State-wide demonstration on the attack.
