PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed the Director of Student’s Welfare (DSW) of Goa University to hold elections to Student’s Council either on January 10 or 11, 2024 and to complete the entire poll process by January 16.
The division bench comprising Justices Mahesh Sonak and Valmiki S A Menezes passed the hearing while hearing a writ petition filed by four students Shane Rebelo, Junaid Ahmed Suyyed, Roshan Gomes and Sahil Kudalkar, who had challenged the notification dated October 30, 2023, issued by the DSW of Goa University at the last minute extending the time-limit prescribed for filing nominations to elect the executive committee of the GU Student’s Council from 1 pm to 5:30 pm.

The petitioners stated that after publishing the names of additional candidates, the DSW included another 20 names from out of 38 ineligible UFRs (University Faculty Representatives) and due to this the list of 42 eligible UFRS was increased to 62 eligible UFRs.
The Court quashed and set aside the decision of the DSW accepting the nominations of six UFRs, stating that the decision to accept their nominations was arbitrary and without application of mind.
The Court however allowed nomination of three other students Prabha alias Karuna Naik, Harsh Gawas and Mandhar Dessai.
Senior Advocate Subodh Kantak and Adv Abhijit Gosavi argued on behalf of the petitioners.
