PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Friday announced that government is contemplating the possibility of increasing the spending on education sector, which is currently 6-7 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Addressing 58th Teacher’s Day celebration, Dr Sawant said that government is working towards bringing the revolution in the education sector and for which several changes needs to be adopted.
“Currently, we are spending around 6-7 per cent of GDP on education. Since education is our priority area, we intend to increase the spending on education,” Dr Sawant, who also holds Education portfolio, said.
Stating that despite providing proper guidance, education through teachers and councillors, students are still left confused over choice of career, Chief Minister expressed the need to introduce career-oriented courses in near future.
“Today students are confused. I know many who have made wrong career choice, where there are no opportunities. Also, there are few, who have made a choice but went for a different career,” Dr Sawant said as he cited an example of a D.ED passed out, who applied for the post of female forest guard and is now holding the post.
He also said that the National Education Policy 2019 will also be implemented in the State, which will bring desired change in the education sector.
On the occasion, Chief Minister honoured seven teachers, including two headmasters and one Special Educator, with the State Awards.
The recipients of the award were Prakash Narayan Gaonkar, primary teacher, Government Primary School, Bhuipal-Sattari; Surekha Damodar Pagi, primary teacher, Government Primary School, Katta-Amona, Quepem; Shivdas Waman Kauthankar, assistant teacher, Government High School, Shirodwadi-Mulgao, Bicholim; Meena Dias, Special Educator, St Xavier’s Academy; Vijaykumar Babusso Kopre Dessai, assistant teacher, Pope John XXIII High School, Quepem; Sudan Fati Naik Gaonkar, headmaster, Government High School, Agarwada, Pernem and Headmaster of Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar High School, Keri-Ponda Nilu Putu Jalmi.
