VASCO: Fifteen days ago, member secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) Levinson Martins filed an FIR against the chief officer, chairperson and other officers for failing to comply with the directives of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Pune order dated May 29, 2014. The Mormugao police, however, are yet to study the case, let alone start an investigation in the matter.
The NGT had served a three-month ultimatum to the MMC to put its garbage treatment plant at Headland Sada in order. After the period elapsed, state administrators, including the then Collector Venancio Furtado, inspected the facility and ordered for rectification. As the MMC failed to comply with the order of the NGT, Martins lodged a complaint against the MMC officials for violating the provisions of the Environment Protection Act.
According to Mormugao police inspector Kapil Nayak, the police team needed more time to study the case and start interrogations as the complaint was given by one government body (GSPCB) against another government body (MMC).
“I am not aware of the details, but as the pollution board officials had come to lodge their complaint, we took their complaint and registered the offence. The moment I get time I will start the investigation,” said Nayak.
When Herald asked about who would be investigated, Kayak replied, “All the officials and councillors who were occupying the chair from May 5, 2014 to March 9, 2015 will be investigated by me. Before that, I will study the matter as the case is slightly sensitive.”
