PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) will conduct a series of inspections at Vasco following reports of the pitiable conditions the residents are living in owing to the increased coal dust pollution.
The decision on the inspection, that will commence on Thursday, was taken at the board meeting chaired by Ganesh Shetgaonkar on Wednesday. “The team will monitor the situation and submit the findings to the Board,” the Chairman told Herald, adding that the meeting on the issue has been adjourned to February 28.
Dark soot found on people stepping out in open, utensils, furniture and even eatables and water has evoked strong reactions from the activists fighting the coal dust pollution. The local body also expressed serious concern after the photograph of a toddler’s feet covered with the dark dust went viral.
Angry residents have often complained that coal handling at MPT has been a matter of concern for locals and activity at the berth takes place at a mere distance of 50 metres from residential areas. With the winds the coal dust makes its way into the houses.
