Margao: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), at its 119th board meeting on Thursday, discussed the issue of the Sonsoddo landfill. It was approved that permission be granted to start the work on the landfill site on the condition that only a maximum of 15 per cent of the waste rejects get into the landfill.
“It was also decided that a record be maintained of all compost generated, with details of analysis of compost along with usage. For this condition to be met, it is essential that all waste collected should be in segregated form only,” said GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha.
It may be recalled that despite the foundation stone being laid on December 1, GSCPB had not given the consent to establish a landfill on the grounds that Margao Municipal Council (MMC) had failed to effectively segregate tons of waste finding its way to Sonsoddo daily.
The GSPCB had earlier expressed concern that as high as 70 per cent of the waste presently treated at the Sonsoddo plant finds its way into the open dump yard. GSPCB had informed MMC that it has to first take up waste segregation at source to ensure that only biodegradable waste finds its way to the treatment plant after lifting away the dry and plastic waste. Noronha had earlier stated that no purpose will be served with the construction of a landfill site unless the MMC stresses on waste segregation as otherwise, the proposed landfill site will reach saturation stage within months of its commissioning.
It is to be noted that the MMC had made several appeals to the GSPCB in the last two months and had felt that the GSPCB should have allowed work on the landfill site on condition that the site is operated only after the waste segregation is put in place.
