PANJIM: The three-member committee appointed by Goa University (GU) has found Dhempe College of Arts and Science guilty of violating two of the university’s ordinances and failing to declare monthly attendance of students. In a major relief to the students, the varsity has decided not to punish them as the mistake was committed by the college.
The GU Academic Council (AC) that met on Friday has decided to forward the committee’s report to the executive council (EC) for action. Sources said the EC will reportedly recommend penalising the college for the violation.
The committee was constituted to inquire into the attendance fiasco and suggest action on violation of ordinance OC 45. The debarred students had earlier this month filed a writ petition before the High Court of Bombay at Goa challenging the college’s decision withholding their results. They had sought directions to the college as well as GU to declare the Semester I and Semester III supplementary results of First Year BA and BSc, and Second Year BA and BSc exams.
The college, without GU permission, and before the matter could come up for hearing, had declared the results on July 11.
Earlier, GU in its report to Chancellor Dr Mridula Sinha had maintained its stand of not promoting ineligible students citing GU ordinances OC 45 and OA 17 that it was not possible to declare results of the supplementary exams. The college authorities had admitted conducting remedial classes for students who had failed to meet 75 per cent attendance requirement stating that faculty as well as students were engaged in NAAC accreditation process. The college in a subsequent letter denied its earlier claim.
Meanwhile, GU is awaiting a list of nominees to reconstitute its councils – AC, EC and financial committee – from the Chancellor and Goa government as the term ends on July 31.
