PANJIM: The manual sorting of documents at Goa University (GU) will soon be a thing of the past as it has engaged the services of a Kerala-based firm to store data in electronic form. Keltron, a government of Kerala undertaking, is already on the job to implement ‘GU management system’.
Besides maintaining records in a common database, the attendance and academic performance of students will also be saved for easy access, Vice Chancellor Satish Shetye told Herald.
“This is an attempt to enhance the computing system. The flow of documents will be electronic once the ‘GU management system’ is in place. Our dependence to manually retrieve data will be reduced,” he said. The software, Shetye added, will also help track students’ academic details.
GU had entered into a contract with the agency for a period of around three years that also includes maintenance of the software after installation. “This project has been in the making for three to four years… We signed the contract one year ago, which means there are two years left for the overall implementation,” he said.
“The software consists of a series of modules. Each of these will be implemented one-by-one,” he explained.
Once implemented, GU has plans to rope-in affiliated colleges into the one-stop information centre. “In the second phase of the project, there would be an option to interface with affiliated colleges. At least the basic data could flow through this system, which would be accessed by GU,” he revealed.
