PANJIM: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHE) is planning to draw up guidelines for schools on the pattern of internal assessment, after conducting an analysis of performances of school in public exams conducted by the Board, since there are allegations that some schools give high internal marks to their students which alters the public exam results.
Chairman of the Goa Board JR Rebello, speaking to Herald on a host of issues recently said that the Board was aware of the fact that high marking in internal assessments is resulting in schools obtaining good results at the Class X Goa Board examinations which have 20 per cent internal component.
“Once we complete the on-going supplementary examination procedures, the Board through its new committee will take up the task of looking into this matter,” Rebello said adding that the GBSHE is seized with the issue.
Rebello pointed out that evaluations done by city schools are in line with the Board. He disclosed that in the present system there is too much stress on passing exams rather than learning.
“There is need for testing students on lesser portion and the evaluation must be more realistic,” he said.
Rebello said that other Boards in the country are following the system of continuous evaluation where the focus is on learning and not passing Board exams.
The process of evaluation is undergoing changes, the Goa Board Chairman pointed out, adding that a system has to be worked out where Board exams will be done away eventually.
“The CBSE has phased out Board exams and introduced the semester system,” he pointed out, saying that the Goa Board will endeavour to find out the way in which the best evaluation of students should be done and get feedback from various quarters in the educational system before drawing out guidelines on the same and circulating it to the schools.
He said that competition at the higher levels of education was acceptable, while that at the school (Board level) should be eliminated.
Rebello also said that the number of students for Science at Class XI had increased considerably this year and there could be between 700 plus students in the Science stream. He said technical and polytechnic institutions would now get adequate and quality students. In Goa there were also sufficient engineering colleges and students would get ample opportunities to avail of such education in these institutions, he stated.
