Harassed widow’s complaint against Minister Mandrekar not registered for 15 days

Police say the case is under investigation; locals demand suspension of PI Devendra Gad, NGO to approach court to direct police to register FIR

PANJIM: Even fifteen days after the complaint was submitted to the Pernem police station accusing Water Resources Minister Dayanand Mandrekar of abettment of suicide, it is yet to be registered.
On December 10, Priya Mitbowkar had complained that the Mandrekar and his son Samir tortured, harassed and threatened his husband Nilesh Mitbowkar to the extent that he committed suicide over the property issue.
Herald in its editions dated December 16 and December 20 had reported extensively on the complaint and the agony Priya went through.
Speaking to Herald, a helpless Priya who is fighting for justice for her husband said that the Pernem Police are yet to register a complaint.
Tara Kerkar of NGO Savera, who has taken up the fight for Priya said that they have also submitted the complaint to the Superintendent of Police North but no action has been initiated.
“We have no other way than but to approach the court to direct the police to file an FIR,” Kerkar says.
Further, she added, “this proves how sensitive this government is with regards the issues of women in Goa.”
Verla Canca Sarpanch Milton Marques said that next week they will file a petition before the JMFC Pernem and seek directions for registering a complaint.
“We will not keep quiet until justice is given to Priya,” he said.
Panch member Vinod Palyekar said, “If this is the way a woman is treated in the chief minister’s constituency itself what would happen to the others.”
“The police inspector is hand in glove with the culprits and he should be immediately suspended,” he demanded.
When Herald contacted Pernem Police Inspector Devendra Gad for his comments for delay in registering complaint his only answer was it is under investigation.
“We have received the complaint and we are looking into it,” was all he said.
On Wednesday President of the State Mahila Congress has called for resignation of the water resources minister Dayanand Mandrekar in connection with the case.
