MAYEM: Authorities have issued a high alert notice in Bicholim and Sattari talukas for the next 24 hours in view of inclement weather in the State.
According to Bicholim Joint Mamlatdar Priya Sawant, who is presently holding additional charge, the notice has been issued after India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning that Goa was likely to experience cyclonic winds accompanied by heavy rains during the next 24 hours.
Acting on the information, Sawant convened a special meeting with taluka officials to take note of the preparedness of the government machinery to tackle the situation.
“The high alert notice was issued by the collector in view of previous experience, as Bicholim and Sattaris talukas are prone to devastation during such weather conditions,” said Sawant.
“The Disaster Management Cell for Bicholim and Sattari talukas has been reconstituted and will closely monitor the situation for about 15 days. The low-lying areas which have been on alert include the Sanquelim market, Maulingtad (Sanquelim), Shantadurga junction (Bicholim) parts of Pilgao, Keri and Sattari, Gaonkarwada, Bandarwada, Mandrekarwada, Paltadwada (Ona-Maulinguem) and Honda,” informed Sawant.
The joint mamlatdar also warned that the rivers in Bicholim and Sanquelim could get flooded if heavy rains continue to lash the region.
Government officials, including those from the police, fire brigade, health, PWD, WRD, BDO, municipal and panchayat bodies have been asked to be in close contact with the DMC, which is operational at the Bicholim mamlatdar building.
