PONDA: The Dudhsagar River is under threat as rampant and illegal sand extraction at Shakre-Khandepar is being carried out allegedly by locals under the cover of darkness.

The villagers say that the banks on both sides of the river are collapsing and have demanded action against those involved in the illegal activity for violating the High Court orders.
They alleged that pebbles too are extracted along with sand as it fetches a high price and is used for construction purpose and added that the loot and plunder of sand and pebbles also affects the course of the river.
Sources say that the sand is extracted by machine every night with the help of migrant labourers who stay in Usgao and it is then transported towards Usgao by trucks.
It may be recalled that officials of the Directorate of Mines and Geology had raided and seized machinery used for extracting sand previously, however, the illegal trade has resumed again.
