Barebhat Lok-Utsav celebrates Goa’s folk traditions, honours senior citizens

A large number of villagers gathered at Raia on Sunday for the Barebhat Trib al Lok-Utsav-cum-Konkani Kantaram, organised by the Barebhat Social and Cultural Association, Arlem-Raia, to celebrate Goa’s rich folk tra ditions and honour the contri bution of senior citizens. The special programme was held at the Raia Panchayat Hall, bringing together elderly residents, villagers and com munity representatives for an afternoon of cultural activities and interaction. President of the Barebhat Social and Cultural Association Romaldo Gonsalves welcomed the gathering and highlight ed the importance of keeping Goa’s traditional culture and community practices alive.

He said such programmes provide an opportunity for people to come together and strengthen the bond between different generations. Curtorim MLA Alexio Regi naldo Lourenco, who was the chief guest, appreciated the organisers for conducting the Lok-Utsav and for their efforts to promote Goa’s traditions and culture. Lourenco said it was nec essary to organise such pro grammes regularly to preserve and protect Goa’s cultural heritage. He stressed that the younger generation should be encouraged to learn about tra ditional customs, games and cultural practices. He also as sured the organisers of his full support for initiatives aimed at promoting Goan traditions. Rachol Sarpanch Joseph Vaz, Sazora Sarpanch Riya Vallisha Oliveira, besides Raia panchayat members Xavier Fernandes, Peter Quadros and Trifon Cardozo and others were among those present.

The association said the programme for senior citizens was organised to acknowl edge their contribution to vil lage society and provide them with a platform to participate in community and cultural ac tivities. The Lok-Utsav featured var ious aspects of local culture and traditions. Traditional competitions such as Fulfanti and Naal Solop were organ ised, while sporting events including football, tablam, mettani, logorio and koihiba formed part of the celebra tions. Event witnessed tradition al games and folk practices which are an important part of Goa’s cultural identity and need to be preserved by en couraging greater participa tion among the younger gen eration.

The large presence of vil lagers added to the festive atmosphere, with residents participating in the various ac tivities and supporting the as sociation’s efforts to promote traditional culture. The association said the Lok-Utsav was aimed at cel ebrating Goa’s cultural herit age, strengthening community participation and promoting respect for senior citizens.
