MAPUSA: Independent and Goa Forward Party supported candidates registered victory in the three Bardez panchayat byelections.
Nicole Marques, daughter of former sarpanch late Milton Marques won the byelection of Verla Canca while Pravin Kocharekar and Sonia Salgaonkar won respectively in Oxel-Siolim and Bastora Village Panchayats.
The byelections counting was held under the supervision of Returning Officer Rajaram Parab at Bardez Mamlatdar Complex. However, while the counting was in progress, twice the service of 108 Emergency was called as two candidates fell unconscious and needed medical attention. The first incident was reported during Oxel counting where former sarpanch Rama Parab fell unconscious while in the second case, a candidate from Bastora Reema Morajkar reportedly fainted.
Nicole, who contested from Ward No 6 of Verla Canca Village Panchayat pulled 303 votes and defeated Zacarias Mendes, an independent candidate, who got 135 votes while Mohan Dabhale, BJP-backed candidate pulled 74 votes in a triangular fight. Pravin Kocharekar, who won as an independent candidate from Ward No 7 of Oxel Village Panchayat with 168 votes and a margin of 39 defeated former sarpanch and BJP supported candidate Rama Parab.
In Bastora, Sonia, an independent candidate won the by-election in Ward IV of Bastora Panchayat by defeating BJP supported candidate Reema Morajkar with a margin of 147 votes. Salgaonkar was supported by former MLA and Goa Forward Party President Kiran Kandolkar. Sonia pulled 270 while Reema Morajkar got 123 votes and Megha Govekar polled 38 votes.
