Sanguem : The residents of Kharkhatiaghati Sanguem are worried about their health and have urged the pollution board and other government authorities to give them some solace from the unbearable foul smell that emanates from the land fill site at Kharkhatiaghati.
It is pertinent to note here ever since the Curchorem Cacora Municipality have begun dumping garbage at the Kharkhatiaghati land fill site in an open area, the residents are left a worried lot on account of the increasing air pollution in the locality.
Moreover the foul smell generated in the locality makes the situation all the more worse and the residents who have been residing in the locality tension free over the years are now compelled to think as to what lies in store for them in the days to come.
A citizen Freddy Pereira informed that the land fill site has become a mosquito breeding and other dreaded flies in the locality.
“On account of increasing number of flies, we can’t keep our doors and windows open even for a minute,” said Pereira.
It is pertinent to note here that after a report on ‘Herald last month after the foul smell had also invaded the Sanguem Court, the officials from the Pollution Control Board, had inspected the area and the situation was somewhat minimised.
However, taking advantage of Sunday, the municipal officials once again put the heavy machinery into operation at the land fill site today leading to the foul stench invading the whole residential area.
A resident Santan Rodrigues informed that with no mechanism in place to control the garbage dumping site, the workers are simply dumping the garbage in a haphazard manner and once the area is filled the garbage is further pushed with the heavy machinery leading to unbearable stench in the area.
The land fill site has also led to increasing number of stray cattle menace in the locality, added Rodrigues.
Meanwhile, when the residents confronted the municipal workers over using the heavy machinery at site, the workers had a ready answer claiming that the municipal officials had directed them to do on account of it being a holiday.
The residents have once again urged the Pollution Control Board Officials and other government authorities to provide them a permanent solution in the matter.
