VALPOI: About 25 farmers from Keri-Sattari on Wednesday afternoon blocked the road at Keri to insist that a government inspection team takes all farmers into confidence while inspecting their fields which have been destroyed by wild animals.
The residents later cleared the blockade following an assurance from Valpoi Police that the inspection team would visit their farms.
It may be recalled that farmers are agitating for many days now, demanding compensation from the government for the destruction caused to their crops by the wild animals.
When contacted, Valpoi PI S Dalvi said the agitators had blocked the road for about 10 minutes. “However, police assured them that the inspecting team will visit their farm again later in the afternoon,” informed PI Dalvi.
Police further informed that the inspection team, which consists of the Sattari Mamlatdar, officials from the Agriculture department, Forest department and Irrigation department, inspected the farms and held discussions with the villagers and farmers, who had gathered in large numbers, at about 4 pm.
Police said a joint meeting of farmers and the inspecting team has been called on Thursday to hear the grievances of the farmers..
