Target for terror attack and haven for liquor smuggling

MARGAO: Margao railway station is considered as a soft target for a terror attack and a gateway for liquor smuggling.
But, sadly, the Konkan Railway police station is functioning without a police station in-charge of the rank of police inspector, while the deputy superintendent of police is holding additional charge in the Crime branch. Indeed, it has been two months since police inspector Vincy Paes was placed under suspension on April 22, but the replacement is yet to come till date.
Although PI Paes was reinstated on June 27 last and that the government has promoted a number of PSIs as police inspectors, there’s no PI posted at the Konkan Railway Police Station, leaving the day-to-day affairs to a lone PSI and a handful of constables.
Sources in the know say though the Konkan Railway Police station has been successful in making a couple of liquor seizures in the last two months, bootlegging at the Margao railway station has not come to a stop.
Sources say that railway station continues to be the favourite point of bootleggers to smuggle liquor out of Goa to various destinations in the country.
When contacted, a senior police officer expressed surprise that the government has not deemed proper to depute a police officer of the rank of PI to head the Konkan Railway Police Station since the suspension of the then PI.
