CANACONA: About 22 coconut trees are on the verge of destruction after lightning struck the trees at Agonda-Canacona few days ago.
The lightning struck last Monday and initially just two coconut trees ~  near the residential house of Lourecihna Fernandes at KarashirMoll-Agonda showed the effect.
“Amid torrential rains and thunder and lightning, we heard the sound of something hitting outside last Monday during the day. When the rains subsided, we went outside and saw that the leaves of two of our coconut tree were burnt,” informed Fernandes, who has a plantation of over 50 coconut trees surrounding her residence.
“As others in the neighbourhood were alerted, every one corroborated that lightning had hit our coconut plantation,” added Fernandes.
“After about 2 to 3 days, we could see leaves of some more coconut trees slowly drying up and eventually, 22 coconut trees were found to be affected by the lightning,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes informed that she has approached taluka agriculture officials at Chaudi, who reportedly told her that there is no remedy to stop the coconut trees from getting destroyed now, but assured suitable compensation for the natural calamity and asked her to file compensation claims with photographic evidence and other documents for the same.
