Mormugao Taluka has about 48 government as well as government aided Primary, Middle and high Schools where the Mid Day Meals are served to total of 14532 students studying in different schools. The Assistant District Education Inspector (ADEI) Vasco has appointed 10 self help groups/Mahila Mandals to prepare the mid day meal as per the prescribed norms laid down by the state government.
Interestingly unlike the past where the students and school management had several complaints with regards to quality and lack of nutrition in the meal, the situation has improved considerably and the same was noticed during the visit to these schools by Herald Investigation Team (HIT).
After speaking to over three dozen students in two schools visited by Team Herald, it was noticed that the students were actually happy with the quality of mid-day meal served to them.
HIT visited Government Primary Kannada and Urdu Medium primary School at Zorint in Sancoale and Government Primary and High School at Zuarinagar.
The school has 114 students and the school authorities were complying with the norms and rules laid down by the education department before serving the meal to the students. Head Mistress Kunda Pawar tasted the meal in front of Supplier after it arrived. Then a parent from neighbourhood, (the school authorities invite on daily basis) tastes the meal and the same is then supplied to the students in a plate donated by some company. Regular visit by the ADEI to check mid day meal, however was not complied.
The Government Primary and High School at Zuarinagar has 340 students strength (only high school). The school authorities as well as students and parents had no complaints about the quality of mid day meal received to them by Jagruti Mahila mandal having its kitchen at Vaddem in Vasco.
