PORVORIM: MLAs on Thursday brought to the notice of the House the pressure they face to ensure admission of children of constituents in private schools, irrespective of merit.
“Soon after the results are over, you see parents coming to MLAs seeking help for admission of their child in the best private school, irrespective of their merit. Sometime, parents come with their kids and we fall for their innocent faces,” Velim MLA Felipe Neri Rodrigues said.
The MLA demanded that this needs to be stopped, where educational institutions should make clear that admissions are only on merit basis. “Being our voters, we have to help them,” he admitted.
The MLA demanded that the government set up open schools for school drop outs.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said, “Many parents come to me asking for help for their kids’ admission in private schools. We have to help them somehow.” He demanded that sports be made a compulsory subject in the school curriculum and urged the government to increase the number of BEd and DEd colleges.
