MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to make the Holy Spirit church feast plastic free and the move has been welcomed by all.
The step has been taken on lines of Old Goa feast, which was first to be made plastic free. MMC also plans to extend this prohibition to the exhibitions that happen in MMC jurisdiction.
MMC councillors have approved and welcomed the decision. MMC has decided to appoint contractor to oversee the entire operation and also to ensure that there is no use of plastic at the feast.
“The contractor has been entrusted with the duty to make sure no plastic is used to trade any goods sold at the feast,” Chairperson Babita Angle said, adding that people found using plastic would be heavily fined.
MMC has also suggested that the people and traders bring their own bags or use paper, which is biodegradable.
