MARGAO: In an earnest step to tackle the garbage collection and segregation at source, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle has led the way forward by personally going shop to shop in Margao as part of the civic body’s awareness campaign. The MMC chairperson was seen distributing pamphlets that carried information about the entire garbage collection process with advice on how to dispose and segregate their garbage. They were also explained how the door-to-door garbage collection system works across the 25 wards and the numbers of garbage collection supervisors were also displayed. Babita urged the shopkeepers not to dump any garbage outside the shops, but dispose it off as explained to them.
The chairperson had recently announced the new system of garbage collection and had acknowledged that there would be some hurdles but with the trial phase already having been completed in Fatorda wards and the ongoing awareness campaign, she is hopeful that the civic body would meet its goal of segregation at source.
Further, as part of its outreach programme to target 28 schools, the MMC has been conducting an ‘Information Education and Communication Programme” for schools in Margao. MMC had roped in garbage management consultant Gaurav Pokle who conducted the programme at Presentation High School and Mahila Nutan High School recently.
The topics were segregation, collection, transportation and scientific disposal of municipal solid waste, Swachh Bharat and Nitol Goem. The remaining schools would be covered in the next two months.
The students were given a presentation on the municipal solid waste management rules and how citizens are required to separate their garbage into wet and dry waste.
(non biodegradable/recyclable/ non recyclable). The composition of wet waste and about how it is disposed in a green bin and the same for a dry waste in a black bin was also explained to them along with various tips.
