MARGAO: In view of the increasing number of fatal accidents, Goa Police has tightened its screws with regards to law enforcement by initiating action against violators by registering FIRs followed by arrests.

In past six days, Margao Traffic Cell has not just fined the traffic law breakers but has lodged nearly 10 FIRs in the concerned police stations followed by arrests. All the accused involved in rash driving besides drunken driving will be charge-sheeted in coming days.
It is pertinent to note that taking serious note of the fatal accidents Goa Police has launched a “Zero Accident Week” since January 17. The Margao Traffic Cell has since then filed FIRs against the traffic law violators in the police stations such as Margao, Maina-Curtorim, Cuncolim and Fatorda.
Speaking to Herald Margao Traffic Cell PI Gautam Salunke said earlier the department would impose Rs 2,000 fine on the traffic rule violators followed by suspension of driving licence. However, now the department has gone a step ahead and started lodging FIRs followed by arrests and charge-sheets in courts.
“The 10 FIRs registered against the violators are mainly because they were found engaged in rash and negligent driving, endangering human life and driving under the influence of alcohol. These FIRs will remain on record of the violator”, he said.
He said the Margao Traffic Cell has recommended cancellation of 1,450 licences before the RTO, as per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. These licence holders were involved in either over-speeding, red light jumping, carrying passengers in goods carriers, using mobile phones while driving and drunk driving.
Margao Traffic Cell has registered nearly 54,000 cases against traffic rule violators.
“We have now started a day-night drive against violators, besides surprise nakabandi”, informed PI.
