PANJIM: Sarita Fernandes, a marine activist and a managing trustee — Ocean, Coastal and Ecological Alliance Network and Goa Sea Turtle Trust from Goa won the title “Creating value out of Weed” at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) held recently, at Lisbon.
According to Sarita, she is the first woman delegate to represent the State of Goa as well as India at the UNOC.

“It was an innovative hackathon wherein the participants had to come out with an innovative solution on the certain themes of the ocean such as sustainable seafood, shipping, renewable energy, plastic and others within 24 hours and had to present in front of the two panels,” Sarita said. “Around 15 groups comprising 150 delegates from across the globe were present which saw António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations and President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa as the chief guest of the function,” she added.
Briefing about her idea Sarita said, “I came up with the creative business idea that will use invasive species which have aroused due to shipping or human error that can be used as the fertilisers, to create cattle feed or to create seafood dishes out of it. Basically, it is for creating value out of weed.”
Expressing a great happiness Sarita said that she was the only delegate from Goa who was representing India as well as the State of Goa at the United Nations Ocean Conference, in Lisbon.
