PANJIM: The Medical fraternity in Goa has welcomed the government’s decision to present the “Prevention of Violence against Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institutions Bill” in the forthcoming session of the Goa State Legislative Assembly.
In a statement, the President of the Indian Medical Association Goa State Branch Dr Gladstone D’Costa and the President of the Goa Medical Council, Dr Shekhar Salkar, jointly welcomed the cabinet decision.
“The Goa government needs to be congratulated for its proactive approach, and hopes the same attitude will be adopted in passing the Clinical Establishments Act,” the statement reads.
The government hopes to pass the bill that seeks to protect their health service personnel and institutions from assaults, both in the private and public sector, in the next session of the Goa Assembly, scheduled to be held in the second week of October.
“Assaults on doctors and damage to hospitals are both on the increase both in the private as well as the public sector,” Dr Salkar said.
Ever since Andhra Pradesh introduced a similar ordinance in 2007, more than 16 states have also passed such laws to protect medical personnel.
