PANJIM: All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Wednesday said that minimum wages notified by the State government are unscientific and anti-working people.
Addressing a press conference in Panjim, AITUC General Secretary Goa-State Christopher Fonseca said, “The minimum wages notified by the government are unscientific, unjustified and unfair. The government has failed to take into consideration the unprecedented escalation in the prices of all essential commodities of food, clothing and shelter. The prices of water and electricity tariffs have also been increased year after year.
Similarly, the cost of education, medical, health-care, transport and LPG cylinders have also gone beyond the reach of the common and working people comprising a family of himself, his wife and two children.”
After almost years of inordinate delay the state government has finally notified the minimum wages for all schedules of employment in Goa viz. unskilled category at Rs 407 per day; semi-skilled at Rs 468 per day; skilled at Rs 518 per day; highly skilled at Rs 565 per day plus dearness allowance (DA) of Rs 105 per day with effect from August 11, 2023.
“AITUC out rightly rejects the government notification on minimum wages and notifies the government that the united working people in Goa will oppose its nefarious designs done in collusion with the employer-class. The working-people will need to wage relentless and striking struggles until they secure a just and fair-living wage for all,” Fonseca said.
As a first step to protest against the notified minimum wages, the state committee of AITUC will hold a demonstration on August 29 in Panjim.
